A guide to live music in Shimokitazawa
By StageMichi · Editorial review:
Start with a neighbourhood, then find a show worth making time for. Shimokitazawa brings live music into a part of Tokyo also known for vintage shops, record browsing and cafés. This guide helps you turn an afternoon in the area into a live music visit, with a few practical checks before you book.

01 / Make music part of a neighbourhood visit
You do not need to build your whole day around a famous landmark here. A useful approach is to choose an evening performance first, then leave space beforehand to explore the surrounding shops and cafés. GO TOKYO describes both Shimokitazawa's shopping and its music culture; that combination is a reason to spend time in the neighbourhood rather than arrive only at showtime. [1]
Shimokitazawa Station is served by the Odakyu and Keio Inokashira lines. Save the venue's address and check its access page before choosing an exit. A familiar station name does not tell you which street, entrance or floor you need. [1]
Our boundary: this guide's main directory uses StageMichi's Shimokitazawa area label. The broader search block called “Shimokitazawa & Setagaya” also includes Shindaita, Nishi-Eifuku and Setagaya. Those are separate areas; their venues are not counted in the Shimokitazawa total below.
02 / Read the programme, not just the venue's reputation
The appeal of exploring Shimokitazawa is not a promise that every room plays one kind of music. Our directory includes live houses and live bars, and the difference between two nights at the same address can matter more than an editorial genre tag. Treat those tags as a way into the search, then listen to the artists on the official bill.
Public programmes also show different ways to structure a night. DaisyBar's official listings, for example, include events with several performers as well as bills labelled “ONE MAN” or “TWO MAN.” These labels help you understand whether the evening focuses on one act or a smaller shared bill; check each event for the actual lineup. [4]
The local scene has room for different formats even within one building. The operators of Chikamichi and Otemae identify a basement live house and a first-floor acoustic bar. This is a useful reminder to match the room name on your ticket to the room you intend to enter, rather than navigate by address alone. [6]
03 / Live houses and music spaces to explore
These are starting points chosen for their different access and room-planning considerations, not a ranking. Use each StageMichi venue page for the saved address and source links, then check the official programme for your travel date.
Shimokitazawa SHELTER
SHELTER is a basement venue at Kitazawa 2-6-10. Its official site provides a programme, making it a place to start comparing dates and performers. Use the event listing rather than treating a familiar venue name as a promise about the music that night. Source
Shimokitazawa CLUB Que
CLUB Que lists its room on B2 of the Big Ben building at Kitazawa 2-5-2. Save the floor as well as the street address. The operator also asks visitors not to gather around the entrance, so use its directions when arriving for a show. Source
DaisyBar
DaisyBar is in the basement of the El Santo Kitazawa building at Kitazawa 2-2-3. Its programme gives you a way to compare shared bills and more focused events. Read the listing for your date, including notices and the ticket instructions. Source
Shimokitazawa Laguna
Laguna lists the first floor of the same Kitazawa 2-2-3 building where DaisyBar lists the basement. They have separate programme pages. If you have saved both venues, match the name and floor on your reservation instead of assuming the address identifies one room. Source
Shimokitazawa Chikamichi
The operators distinguish Chikamichi, a basement live house, from Otemae, a first-floor acoustic bar at Kitazawa 3-31-15. Check which room hosts the performance you want. This makes the pair useful to compare when deciding between a live-house setting and an explicitly acoustic-bar format. Source
Shimokitazawa Otemae
Otemae is the first-floor acoustic bar in the Chikamichi / Otemae building. Read its own programme and booking instructions rather than using those for the basement room. The format is a starting point for your choice, not a guarantee of seating or a particular performer. Source

04 / Choose the show, then check the room
If you are looking for bands
Open a few official schedules for the date you can attend. Listen to a track by the listed performers, check whether the event has multiple acts, and compare the music rather than choosing solely by the venue name. Do not assume that every artist in a shared bill plays the same style.
If you prefer an acoustic format
Use a venue's own description to narrow the options: Otemae identifies itself as an acoustic bar. That is more useful than assuming that every bar listing means an acoustic performance. Still check the individual event, seating arrangements and reservation instructions. [6]
If room size or seating matters
Ask about the layout for the specific show. We have not verified comparable capacity figures for every venue here, so this guide does not sort them into invented size categories. Standing, seating and an unobstructed view are separate questions; a small room does not guarantee a seat.
If you are fitting music around a travel day
Check both the venue entrance and your journey back. “OPEN” normally indicates when entry begins and “START” when the performance starts; they are not interchangeable. A shared bill may not publish each artist's stage time. Do not plan a tight connection around a guessed finishing time.
05 / Before your first live house visit
- Follow the booking route for that event. A ticket seller, venue reservation and an artist's reservation list can have different procedures. Check whether the event permits door sales, whether it is sold out, and what you need to show at entry. Walk-in entry and English assistance are not guaranteed.
- Read what the ticket price includes. Look for an extra drink charge, often written as “+1D” or “ドリンク代別.” Confirm the current amount and payment method rather than adding a standard sum to every show. DaisyBar has posted a drink-charge revision notice, illustrating why a remembered amount may be outdated. [4]
- Have the details ready. Keep the event name, date, reservation name and confirmation available. Retain any QR code or collection instructions. Follow the entry order stated by the organiser; arriving early does not necessarily mean entering first.
- Find the queue without blocking neighbours. CLUB Que specifically asks visitors not to gather around its building entrance. Follow venue signs and staff directions instead of forming your own queue outside. [3]
- Check the rules before using your phone. Ask about photography, video and recording. A rule at another show does not automatically apply here. Be considerate of performers and other listeners, and check bag storage or accessibility needs directly before booking.
- Do not assume re-entry. Moving between venues is not the same as holding a multi-venue event pass. Confirm re-entry and admission conditions before leaving a show or planning to visit several rooms in one night.
For a quick introduction to the format, see StageMichi's first live house notes. For ticket changes, refunds or urgent event questions, contact the venue or the ticket provider.
06 / Keep nearby options separate
Shindaita: LIVE HOUSE FEVER
LIVE HOUSE FEVER is listed separately under Shindaita. Its official English page describes access from Shindaita, Shimokitazawa and Setagaya-Daita stations. Consider it as a separate destination and check the route, rather than assuming every venue in the broader Setagaya search block is beside Shimokitazawa Station. [7]
For another day, compare venues in Shibuya or Shinjuku through the Tokyo directory. They are other music areas to explore, not stops on a promised walking route from Shimokitazawa. Explore the published guides below when planning another evening.
